A ``stateless'' man who has been held by immigration authorities in a Metro detention centre for two years will have to remain in custody for at least another month.
Derar Kidane, 37, is waiting for Federal Court Judge James Jerome to decide if he will be allowed to stay in Canada or if he'll be deported.
The judge said it will take one or two months before he makes a decision.
Kidane came to Canada in 1986 as a United Nations- sponsored refugee, but he was ordered deported in February, 1995, because of a criminal record here.
Lawyer Munyonzwe Hamalengwa argued that the indefinite detention Kidane has suffered is illegal and unconstitutional.
But immigration authorities say they're having a hard time trying to figure out which country he's from. Kidane had no identification papers.
He has told authorities he is of Eritrean descent, court was told yesterday, but the Eritrean government has said he is not a national of that country.
